球形の石をブロンズで複製し、その表面に白錆加工を施した作品。1997年9月にギリシャのケファロニア島を訪れたとき、フィスカルド近郊エンプリシ・ビーチの北側にある入江で拾った石を型取りした。
10代の頃、よく何時間もかけてビーチを歩いた。完璧に丸い小石を探すために。休暇で知らない場所を訪れるたび、旅先で新しいプロジェクトが始まるのだった。ほとんど取り憑かれたかのように、偶然が生み出す究極の造形との出会いを求めていた。ときどき砂に半分埋まった小石に目が留まり、胸が高鳴った。表面の形がそのまま裏面に続いていることを祈って拾い上げた。コレクションはどんどん大きくなったが、どんな石にも個別の美しさがあることに気づいたのは最近のことである。

Bronze replica of a round stone in white patina.
The stone was found in a cove north of Emplisi beach, near Fiscardo in Cephalonia, Greece in September 1997.
I remember as a teenager, I used to spend hours walking along the beach, searching for the perfectly round pebble. Every holiday, every journey to another place became a project, an obsession to find the ultimate accidental formation. Sometimes, I would get excited when I spotted a pebble half-buried in the sand and I would pray that, when I picked it up, there would be nothing distorting its shape. Only now do I look at this big collection of stones and see how beautifully different they are.

Michael Anastassiades is a Cypriot-born, London-based designer whose practice encompasses product, spatial interventions, and experimental works, often transcending the distinctions between different fields of creativity.
In a career of more than 20 years, Anastassiades conceived lights, furniture, and objects characterized by a poetic yet rigorous interpretation of technology, materials, and functions.
His work draws inspiration from different sources and distills them in pure, simple structures: from nature to archaic references of his native Cyprus, from the history of modernism to very personal memories, art and the everyday life, a rich set of references is evoked only to be transformed into a timeless vocabulary of forms.
Anastassiades’ practice contemplates both industrial production and artisanal techniques, and in doing so it expands into a vivid, nuanced balance between improvisation and structure, control and intuition.

Michael Anastassiades founded his studio in London in 1994. He trained as a civil engineer at London’s Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine before taking a master’s degree in industrial design at the Royal College of Art.
Recent solo exhibitions include ‘Things That Go Together,’ NiMAC, Nicosia (2019); ‘Silver Tongued,’ SHOP Taka Ishii Gallery, Hong Kong (2019); ‘13 Mobiles,’ Atelier Jesper, Brussels (2017); ‘Doings on Time and Light,’ Rodeo Gallery, Istanbul (2015); ‘Reload the Current Page,’ Point Centre for Contemporary Arts Nicosia, Cyprus (2014); ‘To Be Perfectly Frank,’ Svenskt Tenn, Stockholm (2013); ‘Time And Again,’ MAK, Vienna (2012), Cyprus Presidency at the European Parliament, Brussels (2012); ‘Kinetic Light 2 – Gold Pendulum,’ Norfolk House music room at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London (2010). His work is featured in permanent collections at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, the MAK, Vienna, the Crafts Council, London, the FRAC Centre, Orleans, France and The Saint Louis Art Museum, St. Louis.
Anastassiades is a Royal Designer for Industry (RDI) at the Royal Society of Arts. He is involved in educational programmes at international institutions such as Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London and ECAL, Lausanne.
The studio has collaborated with various manufacturers including Flos, B&B Italia, Herman Miller, Cassina, Bang & Olufsen, Puiforcat, Fratelli Fantini SpA, Lobmeyr, Salvatori, Svenskt Tenn, Carl Auböck/Sigmar, Coedition and SCP. He has designed signature limited edition collections for Nilufar Gallery, Milan, Dansk Mobelkunst, Copenhagen and Taka Ishii Gallery.
